USA West Coast

The USA West Coast is a classic long-haul holiday for travellers who want cities, coastline and desert in one trip. Most DialForHolidays programmes start in Los Angeles or Las Vegas and then follow the Pacific toward San Francisco, or swing inland to the Grand Canyon and the national parks of Utah and Arizona.

California mixes Hollywood, theme parks, Hispanic neighbourhoods and wine country. Nevada is built around Las Vegas nightlife and the Mojave Desert. A typical 7 to 12 day circuit can include Santa Monica and Hollywood, a night in Las Vegas, a Grand Canyon viewpoint, Yosemite or Sequoia if the season allows, and two or three nights in San Francisco for the Golden Gate, Alcatraz and the bay.

Distances are large. The drive from Los Angeles to San Francisco on Interstate 5 is about six hours; the Pacific Coast Highway via Big Sur is slower and scenic. Las Vegas is about four hours from Los Angeles by road. Indian travellers usually fly into Los Angeles (LAX), San Francisco (SFO) or Las Vegas (LAS) and then join a coach tour or a private car with a driver-guide.

West Coast holidays work well as a first USA trip because English is widely spoken, hotels are plentiful, and the sightseeing mix is easy to explain to mixed-age families. Summer is busy and hot in the desert; spring and autumn are more comfortable for Grand Canyon and Las Vegas day trips.

There is no single “USA West Coast climate”. The Pacific shore is mild, the Central Valley is hot in summer, and Las Vegas and the Grand Canyon are desert with large day–night swings.

• April to June: One of the best windows. Coastal California is pleasant, wildflowers appear in the deserts, and Grand Canyon temperatures are easier than mid-summer.
• July to early September: Peak tourism. Los Angeles and San Francisco stay moderate beside the ocean, but Las Vegas, Death Valley and the inner Grand Canyon can exceed 40°C. Yosemite Valley is open and busy; book lodges early.
• Late September to November: Good for city breaks and wine country. Nights cool in the desert. Occasional rain returns to Northern California.
• December to March: Southern California stays mild. San Francisco is wetter. Mountain parks such as Yosemite may have snow and road closures. Las Vegas remains a year-round city break.

If your itinerary includes both the coast and the Grand Canyon, pack layers, sun protection and comfortable walking shoes. Coach tours usually run year-round from Los Angeles and Las Vegas, with some mountain stops seasonal.

Most international guests arrive on a long-haul flight into Los Angeles International (LAX), San Francisco International (SFO) or Harry Reid International in Las Vegas (LAS). Direct and one-stop services from India typically connect via the Middle East, Europe or East Asia.

By air inside the region: Short hops link LAX, SFO, SAN (San Diego), LAS and PHX (Phoenix). Flying saves a day if you are not joining a road tour, but you miss the Pacific Coast and desert scenery.

By road: Self-drive and coach tours are the usual way to see several cities. Interstate 5 and Highway 101 connect Los Angeles and San Francisco. Highway 1 (Pacific Coast Highway) is the scenic option via Santa Barbara, Big Sur and Monterey. I-15 links Los Angeles with Las Vegas. Grand Canyon South Rim is about 4.5 hours from Las Vegas by road.

In the cities: Los Angeles is spread out; a car or tour coach is more practical than public transport for first-time visitors. San Francisco is walkable in the centre, with BART, cable cars and ferries for the bay. Las Vegas hotels sit on or near the Strip, so many guests barely need a car until they leave for the canyon.

Indian passport holders need a US visa (usually B1/B2) unless they already hold another qualifying status. ESTA does not apply to Indian passports. Build visa time into your booking.

These are the stops that appear most often on West Coast packages. You will not cover all of them on a single week; a counsellor will match the list to your days and departure city.

• Los Angeles: Hollywood Boulevard, Santa Monica Pier, Beverly Hills, Universal Studios and the Getty viewpoints. Many tours also include a photo stop at the Hollywood Sign or Griffith Observatory.
• San Diego: A softer beach city south of LA, with the Gaslamp Quarter, Balboa Park and optional Mexico border day trips (documents required).
• Las Vegas: The Strip, themed hotels, evening shows and a base for Grand Canyon West, Hoover Dam or Valley of Fire.
• Grand Canyon: South Rim is the classic viewpoint. West Rim (Skywalk) is closer to Las Vegas on many coach products.
• San Francisco: Golden Gate Bridge, Fisherman’s Wharf, Chinatown, Alcatraz (book ferry tickets early) and Sausalito.
• Pacific Coast: Santa Barbara, Monterey Bay, 17-Mile Drive and Big Sur overlooks when the highway is open.
• Yosemite or Sequoia: Granite cliffs, waterfalls and giant trees; often a long day or an overnight from the coast or the Central Valley.
• Napa or Sonoma: Optional wine-country half day for couples on longer San Francisco stays.

West Coast holidays are built around sightseeing days rather than resort sitting. Typical inclusions on DialForHolidays packages:

• Grand Canyon viewpoints with time for photographs and a short rim walk.

• Free time for shopping on Rodeo Drive, at outlet centres, or in Union Square.

Meals are usually breakfast in the hotel and lunch or dinner as per the voucher. American portions are large; vegetarian and Indian-style restaurants are easy to find in LA, the Bay Area and Las Vegas.

The West Coast is culturally younger than the US East Coast. Los Angeles is the centre of global film and television. The Bay Area is known for technology and a strong Asian and Hispanic population. Las Vegas is entertainment first: hotels, dining and nightlife rather than historic neighbourhoods.

Food follows the people who settled here. You will eat Mexican, Korean, Chinese, Vietnamese and modern Californian menus as often as burgers. Tipping in restaurants and for drivers is customary (about 15–20% for table service).

National parks and tribal lands ask visitors to stay on trails, not to feed wildlife, and not to take rocks or plants. Dress codes are casual. Summer UV is strong even when the air feels cool beside the ocean.
